EMAX at the Citroën C1 Endurance 3hr, Donington Park

EMAX had three cars present at this year’s Donington Park 3hr endurance race. Alex Port and Matthew Rice were in car 343, with Andre Marot, James Taylor, Max Finn and Glen Finn sharing 345. Car 563 was driven by Arran Grisley and Thanassi Barnicoat.

After two podiums at Brands and Silverstone the team were looking forward to a good showing at Donington.

Qualifying was busy with nearly 50 cars taking part on the national circuit and space was at a premium. 345 came home P24, 343 achieved P30 and 563 P32.

The weather was kind for the race, unlike last year’s torrential rain. The EMAX cars set off with two different strategies — Thanassi and Matt pitting early for their dummy pitstop, and Max pitting shortly after 30 minutes from P10 ready for Andre to do an hour in 345.

There was a real buzz around the paddock with so many cars, but nearing the end of Andre’s stint he brought the car into the pits with an overheating issue. A trip through the gravel had seen the auxiliary belt come off, and with no drive on the water pump the engine boiled. The team set about replacing the engine, which was achieved in just under an hour, ready for Glen to jump in for the last 15 minutes. Car 345 was now in last place, 7 laps down on the car in front which also had problems. Glen managed to claw back the 7 laps required, making sure they didn’t finish at the rear of the field.

Thanassi and Arran were driving well with no issues, the car lapping consistently, and with some great pit stops Arran brought the car home in a respectable P21.

Matt and Alex battled hard with no issues but the competition was fierce. No penalties and a strong performance saw the 343 car home in P29.
